In Central Africa, particularly in Gabon, wildlife is a source of protein and income for both rural populations, i.e., those living in cities, and for populations living in local communities, i.e., rural. It constitutes 30 to 80% of protein intake, and was estimated at 1 million tonnes in the Congo Basin region in 1995 and 5 million tonnes in 2005 (Fa et al). The consumption of bushmeat is a great source of calories, nutrients and essential proteins.
