An immigrant Scotsman returns home, yearning in the griefs of his old age for the wife of his heart, for the wife and family he abandoned in South Australia. Always Going Home portrays a migrant's longing for home and family; his relationship with his Aboriginal wife and the fate of his children of mixed descent. In addressing the idea and meaning of home it recounts the life of James Neill, an educated, sensitive and intelligent migrant to South Australia in the middle of the nineteenth century, torn between different worlds in different hemispheres.
