In the fall of 1868, the Utah Territory is in turmoil as the Black Hawk war comes to a less than peaceful conclusion. Brigham Young and the School of the Prophets have urged the Saints of the Salt Lake Valley to contract the work of blasting in the mountains and laying the tracks for both competing railroads. As the Union Pacific railroad blasts its way through the twisted rock at Devil?s Gate, tension mounts in the valley. Everyone knows that the railroad brings change?change that may or may not benefit the Saints, but few are prepared for the rabble that trails the railroad or the trouble they bring. In a quiet valley thirty miles south of the rail line, rumors of lost Spanish gold keep the small town of Heber City in a constant state of unease, and when two young men suddenly disappear, a desperate young girl writes Mitchell for help. Almost as soon as Collin Mitchell and his family arrive in the small mountain town of Heber City, trouble strikes. Collin Mitchell has a reputation, and among the Mormons of the Utah Territory, a reformed gunman is not always the most welcome man in town. Yet Mitchell has other talents, and sometimes a man who can track down a killer can be useful.
