When a mission to fight a powerful villain goes haywire, Nyle Maxwell (Winter) is saved by the hero Busker Burn, who turns out to be his younger brother who has been looking for him for a long time. Their happy reunion is shattered, however, when the government deletes Busker's account and puts a variety of oppressive restrictions on Winter, even locking his level entirely to squash his character growth. Unable to level up, with his brother on the run from the government, and his only ally in the Department of VR replaced by a woman who wants to make his new digital life hell, Winter finds himself backed into a corner he can't punch his way out of. That is, until a mysterious group of illegal players offer Winter a chance to win his freedom, an opportunity Winter jumps on. But in order to regain his freedom, Winter must strike a direct blow against the Department of Virtual Reality itself and expose its darkest secrets to the world.
