CHAPTER VL ENDURING COUNSEL. Verna's courage failed fast as the time approached when she would miss her mother's words of love, and her sister's sweet-toned voice. "You must be brave, my darling," said the mother with forced calmness, as she kissed away the tears which were falling fast. "Mamma makes a great sacrifice, Verna, and you must not permit yourself to indulge in regrets that you are to be separated. You will soon become reconciled to the change," said Evelyn, swallowing her own tears. Gladys, striving to subdue her own agitation, said gravely, "It is only for three months, and you will write often, and tell us all about what you are doing." Verna repressed the teare that were welling her eyes, and struggled bravely to overcome her agitation, lest she distress her mother, and with many promises she bade Evelyn and Gladys good-by with as steady a voice as she could assume, and entered the car with her mother and Miss Serena, bending forward to get a last glimpse of Gladys, who with a sad smile waved her hand until the train passed out of sight.
