After living in several countries, Ruth is a seasoned traveler. Her plans to see the capitals of Europe are enhanced when her college sweetheart, a American soldier stationed in Germany, proposes. The fact that he is black is of no importance to her. The 1961 Berlin Crisis sends Charles?s army unit to West Berlin, where the couple decide to live as civilians for just one year, but one year stretches to twenty and in those two decades Ruth discovers a city full of history, culture and friends.
