"Sticky rice for one" was born following many wonderful experiences encounted by the author. The stories are written diary style and are not just about teaching experiences but also encompass cultural differences,traditional customs,social and psychological adjustments. It is about learning from one another from two very different worlds,it is enlightening to discover the problems may be similar but are approached in different ways according to culture. Subjects include, School sports day, Loy Krathong festival, Meditation weekend in the rainforest,school trip to the seaside,songkran [Thai new year], Thai wedding,visit from the princess. The author talks of the highs and lows not of just a foreigner but of being alone in a foreign land. The road that was paved with rocks towards establishing a good rapport between student and teacher,and the respect shown toward each other. The staff room experiences where the Thai teachers themselves were keen to improve their English as the author was as keen to learn Thai and as a result wonderful relationships flowered."sticky rice for one" was written with future teachers in mind, people thinking about going abroad alone but are afraid to take that giantstep forward out of their comfort zone. But this book could be used as a learning tool about living in a different society,or simply a lighthearted look at what goes on in the world around us.
