Lilly Ballard, a freelance writer, is given an assignment to write an article about historic barns of the Midwest. She arrives at Emma McMaster's home and the journey into a world of Emma's 'secrets' teaches Lilly many things about choices and a love between a mother and her children. Lilly also learns some secrets of her own past as she is drawn into Emma's past. The story is based in Kansas and takes you into the home and life of Emma. Emma is talented and well respected in her community and yet very few know the extent of the life she once led. Emma welcomes each guest into her home but has never felt comfortable sharing her story until she forms a friendship with Lilly. Lilly learns how Emma's past often haunts her and Emma shares her story, regrets and fears. Secrets on Emma's Porch is the story so many victims share and the resilient nature of the human spirit. It shows how children are affected by the choices made by parents and the consequences of those choices which are out of the innocent child's control. It covers the loss of Emma's son at the young age of twenty-four and how she deals with death. Emma's story reaches deep within your heart and soul, stirring emotions of a mother's grief and guilt and encouraging the reader to cheer for Emma and the struggles she faces.
