Livia, her mother and some other relatives boarded a German ship in Tallinn, Estonia on the morning of September 22, 1944 in advance of the Russian Army that had just entered the city. There were three ships in the convoy. One of them was bombed and sunk. The other two made it to Danzig where they disembarked and went on to Berlin. They stayed in Berlin unti l the bombing got too bad and then went to Potsdam. When the war ended they were in Eschwege aft er traveling either by foot or train.
Livia obtained a job as secretary and interpreter at the US Air Base. At the time it was in the US Zone.
Shortly the zone lines were redrawn and she had to head west again.
Livia obtained another position with the 924th Aviation Engineers Headquarters Battalion, where I met her on that April morning in 1946 when I reported in for work. The rest is history.
