Encouraged by his mother, narrator Paul Simmons has left the "idyllic" world of teaching to take a job in the "real" world of business, working as a sales rep for his philandering cousin Ethan. But a year later, this well-educated, highly romantic young man ends up with a severe gunshot wound in downtown Baltimore. While he recovers at the hospital, Paul recounts the roller-coaster ride of this fateful year - the highs and lows of romance and the wild, hilarious, and sometimes frightening misadventures of Ethan and other diverse "master lovers." As Paul's own romantic world careens from love to lovesickness to love again, his philandering cousin's domestic and business worlds begin to spiral out of control.
