A Theory to Kill For

A Theory to Kill For
Carol Iacona
I keep thinking about what I've done. Over a year ago I set out to prove a theory, only a theory. Unfortunately, I did. My theory was simply most murderers get caught because they let their ego get in the way. I planned the perfect murder in my mind to go undetected, at least according to my theory. After putting it on paper I became obsessed and had to know if it really worked. Ego is a strange creature for it blinds you. I cannot believe I, me, an average man, a simple landscaper murdered people. If anyone would have told me I could do such a thing, I'd have told them they were nuts! I could never hurt anyone, I thought. I've heard there's killer in all of us, but most people control the urge and only the monsters of this world let it take over. Somewhere along the way something in me snapped. I killed actual living people now gone forever. Gone because I thought I was so smart. Gone because MY ego took over and, God forgive me, I let it. Now I will spend the rest of my days knowing what I did, just to prove a theory; ultimately a theory that failed miserably.
