Surviving combat and military duty in an active war zone leaves emotional war damage. Physical injuries from combat are obvious, easy to understand with readily accepted treatment. Kilpatrick, a former Navy Medical Service Corps Officer, served as Division Psychologist for the Third Marine Division on the front lines in South Vietnam. He endured mortar and infiltration attacks on the remote field hospital, helped carry dozens of dead Marines off rescue helicopters as well as having to work with approximately 900 emotionally distressed casualties. After thirteen months of this daily pressure, Kilpatrick became another victim of severe war damage, that took years to understand and accept. Yet, forty-five years later, his heart can still race at strange sounds or unknown threats, and he must lock every door and window at night to feel safe.
