The action starts around the year 2000. We first met Rick in 1969 when he was driving a Land Rover out to Isfahan, Persia. He is now retired but we soon find he is no wiser. His love affairs are doomed. The one constant is his boat and his love of the sea. His family keeps him afloat, but his loneliness becomes unbearable and his attempt to remedy his situation leads to a surprising outcome. The novel contains atmospheric descriptions of sailing a gaff cutter along the coast of the West Country, in the Solent and across the Channel to Brittany.
