ABOUT THE BOOK AND AUTHOR

The Awakening was written by Kate Chopin (1850-1904) and is her second novel. It was first published in 1899.

The Awakening is set in Louisiana in the late 19th century. The plot centers on a married woman, Edna Pontellier, and her struggle between her increasingly unorthodox views on femininity and motherhood with the prevailing social attitudes of the turn-of-the-century American South. She seeks greater personal freedom and a more fulfilling life. This novel is seen as a landmark American novel of early femimism.

Kate Chopin was an American author who wrote short stories and two novels set in Louisiana, USA. The two novels are At Fault (1890) and The Awakening (1899). The two short story collections are Bayou Folk (1894) and A Night in Acadie (1897). Kate Chopin is a frequently read and recognized writer of Louisana Creole heritage. She was considered by some to be a leading author of her time. Some scholars believe that she was a forerunner of American 20th century feminist authors.
