Aiden and Cora Donaldson are a happily married couple, both teachers, with a straightforward and happy life together. But one day they have a frightening car accident, and all too soon they discover from the police that it was more than likely not an accident after all. After a late-night encounter in a car park with a shadowy gunman, they must become fugitives and flee for their lives to the remote Orkney Islands. They find what feels like a haven in a crofter's cottage on a windswept landscape. But who is tailing them, and why? And can they really be safe wherever they go?
