He joins the 6th NY Cavalry and, after months of training, rides to war in Northern Virginia, at Antietam and Gettysburg. Owen's abilities are rewarded with promotion. His teenage romance with a girl stations above him, plays in the background, but he meets a new and interesting school teacher in Winchester, Virginia. The causes and effects of the war are stage-center in this book, as are the attitudes of the men who rode with the 6th New York. Book 3 takes the reader through war's end.
