Mercy Evans, born Lisa Grey, spent years being abused and molested by her step father, Ross MacLaine, before finally escaping his cruel attentions. For seven long years she hid from him, never staying in one town for very long. She moved all over the country, until one day, in Salem, Indiana, everything changed. She was going through the mail when she came upon a strange parchment. Upon opening the parchment she found herself no longer in 2015, but in 1355 Scotland, somewhere between Ullapool and Inverness.
