"It's one thing to read about a behavior disorder. It's another thing to have a stapler whizzing past your head." There is a lot of talk in schools today about trauma and how it affects learning. There is also an ever-increasing amount of good, researched information about how trauma presents in a classroom setting. But in the day-to-day life of schools, being knowledgeable about this challenge only takes you so far. It is one thing to understand that these students need a more individualized daily program, and quite another to implement a specialized routine for that student when there are nineteen others who also need attention. Keeping it Real was written to recognize this struggle, and to provide practical strategies for the busy educator by sharing stories and snapshots of real classroom situations and how they were managed.
