Career Decisions in Computer Technology Fields: Influences, Barriers, and Gender Issues
Judy Moody
We start asking children at an early age, What do you want to be when you grow up?" Very few children actually try to become what they first announced as their future career. Some people never follow through or have the opportunity to become what they would like to be and subsequently settle for a job that pays the bills. Career decisions are some of the most important decisions made during a person's life span. The type of work and the pay for that work affect a person's lifestyle health and happiness. However career decisions do not receive the time and thought that they should receive. As computers continue to permeate job sites many new jobs are created and other job positions are redefined. This study examines similarities and dissimilarities of students enrolled in computer technology programs and non-computer programs at Career and Technology campuses in America. Barriers and influences were evaluated to determine if gender played a part in selecting a career. The results are illuminating and point out the processes and barriers to effective efficient and fulfilling career choices."
