Construction Site Layouts: an Optimization Approach to Planning and Managing Airport Expansion Projects

The close proximity between construction resources and airport operational areas is one of the main and unique challenges in airport expansion projects. This proximity often leads to an increased level of risk to construction safety, aviation safety, and airport security. In order to minimize and control these serious types of risk, the construction site layouts for airport expansion projects need to be carefully planned and managed. The main goal of this book is to support construction planners and decision-makers in specifying (1) the locations of all temporary construction facilities on site, including storage areas of material and equipment, site offices, fabrication shops, batch plants, stockpiles of excavation, security fences, and access roads; (2) the use of containment measures in each temporary facility to control the spread of construction debris whenever needed; (3) the use of wildlife control devices on site to minimize the attraction of hazardous wildlife to construction sites; and (4) the selection of suitable and efficient security systems to prevent security breaches that can originate from the airport construction site.
