Spatial sound has long been a topic of interest inelectro-acoustic music. With continual technicaladvancements of methods to achieve spatialisation ofsound, an increase in the realisation of spatialsound ideas can be achieved, while concurrentlygiving birth to new concepts in this area. Wave FieldSynthesis (WFS) provides a compelling method, as itexcels in creating a clear localisation of a virtualsound source for a large listening area. This book gives an overview of spatial techniques inelectro-acoustic music and how WFS fits into thistradition. It describes a framework of software forWFS and gives a description of perspectives on WFSfrom an electro-acoustic composer's viewpoint. In the second half of the book a method is proposedfor the reproduction of arbitrarily shaped objectsemitting sound, using WFS. The mathematics and theimplementation aspects are described, after which themethod is validated with computed examples andlistening tests. The book's target audience consists of artistswanting to learn about sound spatialisation usingWFS, as well as students and scientific researchersin computational acoustics.
