This book consists of six chapters, three of whichdescribe experimental procedures. Chapter 1 providesa general introduction to the research, followed bythe objectives and thesis layout. Chapter 2describes, in detail, miniemulsion polymerization andthe preparation of core/shell particles. In addition,this chapter provides a short overview on the barrierproperties of polymers used in coatings. Thepermeability of low molecular weight molecules, suchas water, through polymers is discussed. Chapter 3gives detailed information about the synthesis of theinvestigated core/shell latices as well as theexperimental methods used for the characterization ofthese latices. Chapter 4 describes the determinationof the particle morphology of the synthesizedcore/shell latex particles. Chapter 5 shows theresults obtained from hydrophobicity, water uptake,conductivity and moisture vapour transmission rate(MVTR) measurements. Chapter 6 summarizes the mainconclusions drawn from the results and mentions somerecommendations and future work.
