Acinetobacter baumannii is one of the most important opportunistic pathogens described by Infectious Disease Society of America. Acinetobacter baumannii has emerged as a threat to soldiers wounded during military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan as well as isolated from natural resources. It causes pneumonia, urinary tract infections and respiratory infections. Carbapenems are the most effective ?-lactam antibiotics that are routinely prescribed by clinicians to the patients infected with Acinetobacter baumannii and other Gram negative bacteria. Emergence of resistant strains against carbapenem makes it difficult to treat Acinetobacter baumannii. Therefore, there is an urgent need to understand the pathogenesis of these diseases and development of more selective and targeted pharmacologic therapeutics. Present studies provides insight into resistance mechanism of Acinetobacter as well as provide a platform to understand the complex nature of carbapenem (?-lactam) resistance in Acinetobacter baumannii using techniques like proteomic analysis, molecular technique, biophysical and bioinformatics tools.
