Breast cancer is one of the second most common cancers in the world. Recent research suggest that plant derived drugs are of great interest due to its health benefits not only food substances of plant origin but also for the therapeutic usage to combat against various ailments due to the absence of adverse side effects. In the present investigation, efficacy of diosgenin in mammary carcinoma cell line (MCF-7) and in experimental breast cancer was investigated. Inhibition of MCF-7 cells is likely to be selective apoptotic nature of the compound diosgenin. In addition, diosgenin is very effective in preventing chemical induced breast cancer possibly through antioxidant and antigenotoxic nature, which was confirmed by various biochemical and molecular events. Thus,the anticancer properties of diosgenin could be useful information for the possible application in cancer prevention and cancer therapy.
