Habitat Use & Effect of Fishing on Spotted Spiny Lobster (P. Guttatus): Including Studies on Size at Maturity, Catchability and Inferences on Fishery Sustainability

The Spotted Spiny Lobster fishery (Panulirus guttatus) in Anguilla, British West Indies is largely unregulated and concerns exist regarding its sustainability. This study looked into aspects of the fishery and also assessed size at maturity for both males and females of the species. This information, combined with detailed habitat surveys of twelve study sites around the island and statistical analysis of foraging habitat preferences, allowed predictions to be made relating to the fishery's sustainability. Habitats could be classified into those more favorable for healthy lobster populations and by examining fishing pressure in these areas an effect of fishing on the populations present could be inferred. From the results of this study it was possible to make recommendations that, if followed, will hopefully ensure the longevity and future success of this important fishery resource.
