This study entitled ?Mulk Raj Anand?s Coolie: A study in discourse analysis? is an attempt to examine the pattern of narrative discourse (novel) in general and a sample text of Indian English narrative discourse (novel) in particular. The study is laid out into six chapters. Chapter 1 deals with the reasons for undertaking this study, the aim and scope of this study, the concept of ?text? and ?discourse? and the model of discourse analysis. Chapter 2 deals with the concept of literary discourse situation and structures of Coolie?s discourse situation. Chapter 3 outlines the structure of the tenor of literary discourse and attempts to bring out the tenors of Coolie?s narrative discourse. Chapter 4 deals with the composition of the value picture of narrative discourse in general and makes an analysis of how the value picture of the novel is structured. Chapter 5 deals with the concept of discourse markers and attempts to bring out their value in the narrative discourse of the novel. Chapter 6 presents an overall view of the findings of this study.
