Collision of Past and Present: the Collective Memory of the Armenian Genocide and the Turkish Denial
Mari Hovhannisyan
This book reveals the Armenians? perception and the collective memory of the Genocide committed by the Turks during World War I with the aim of understanding and explaining the key factors of keeping the memory of the Genocide alive. The manuscript scrutinizes the Turkish state-orchestrated continuous denial and its influence on the collective memory of the Armenian Genocide. The historical transitions, authoritarian regime pressure, the massacres of 1988 in the Azerbaijani city Sumgait, and the foreign environment in the case of the Armenian Diaspora are analyzed as incentives of keeping the memory of the Genocide alive.
