Islamic Fundamentalism and the Struggle of Meaning on the Internet: the Examination of the Websites of Hizb Ut-tahrir Britain and Indonesia

This book is a study of the discourses of Islamic fundamentalist movement namely Hizb ut-Tahrir (HT) on the internet. Although the HT identifies itself as a global political party in which it has existed in almost 45 countries with London as its headquarter, this study is of the argument that there is always interconnection between local and global context in which this Party is based. Additionally, this study is a comparative perspective of both global and local discourses in the two different HT?s branches namely in Britain and Indonesia. While the former represent the global and minority muslim country, the latter characterize the local and majority Muslim country. The study argues that the discourse is important in context of political struggle as it can be a influential means to challenge the existing social forces. The study furthermore argues that internet does not merely play important role in constructing the collective identity and mobilizing collective action, but also in massively indoctrinating the public.
