Phase Modulation Techniques for On-off Keying: Boosting Transmission Capacity in Optical Fibres
Marco Forzati
The production and exchange of information drive muchof today's economy. This information exchange takesplace more and more at a global level, so it becomescrucial to be able to transmit ever larger amounts ofinformation over very long optical-fibre transmissionlinks. At the same time, the sobering up after theburst of the dot-com bubble in 2000-2001 has madecost a major consideration in any upgrading solution. This translates into the need for modulationtechniques that allow for the transmission of highbit rates over large distances at minimum cost. Thisbook presents three phase-modulation techniques thatallow the upgrade of existing transmission links tohigher bit rates using cost-effective On-Off keyingand direct detection. This is achieved thanks to thesuppression of intra-channel non-linear effects, suchas IFWM which become a major impairment for bit ratesof 40 Gb/s and above. The techniques are examinedanalytically, tested in numerical simulations, andverified in transmission experiments.
