Adrian Mars, a political science professor, is fortuitously thrust into the role of special commissioner for Maderas' Special Anti-Corruption Office (SACO). Initially, Mars believes his assignment to be an honest effort to finally bring the weight of the law down on the historically corrupt country of Maderas. However, he soon finds himself immersed in a web of political intrigue in which power-seeking politicians, plutocrats, drug lords, and foreign interests battle for power by resorting to Machiavellian deceptions and naked violence. Gradually, Mars comes to discover that, unbeknownst to him, SACO was formed as a political compromise between ruthless political factions at war with one another. As Mars comes to the stark realization that he is nothing more than a pawn in a nefarious political game, he must chose between forsaking his ideals, agreeing to becoming a mere cog in the wheels of corruption, or continuing his relentless pursuit of justice; even if this would entail putting his life at risk. Will Mars survive the storm of events he has unleashed with his relentless quest to confront his country's corruption?
