It is, according to some critics, the most autobiographical novel by the famous North American writer, where he highlights his first and difficult steps on the way to consecration. Martín Eden, protagonist and narrator, meets a young student of letters, belonging to the bourgeoisie, and in love with her and her cultural world, he becomes an inveterate reader, abandoning the profession of sailor who until then has provided him with the sustenance, to become an assiduous intellectual to the Oaklan and Berkeley libraries, with the clearest and absolute convictions of becoming in the near future, a famous writer, capable of living from his work as such. The hardships and miseries that will pass the young Martin Eden while he travels the long journey to the consecration, will end up destroying his hopes, even after achieving the desired goal, eventually becoming a successful writer. But the rebuffs and disappointments he has had to go through to reach that goal, after flatly refusing to work in anything other than writing, have finally robbed him of all illusions, and, consequently, the desire to live.
