In early-'30s Germany, dedicated if self-involved stage actor Hendrik Höfgen (Klaus Maria Brandauer) built repute and respect for his performance of Mephistopheles in "Faust." However, as the years found his homeland in the ever-tightening grip of Nazism, his compromise and collaboration in order to hold center stage left him the one selling his soul. István Szabó's spellbinding winner of the Best Foreign Film Oscar co-stars Krystyna Janda, Ildikó Bánsági. 144 min. Widescreen; Soundtrack: German; Subtitles: English; audio commentary; featurettes; theatrical trailers. In German with English subtitles.
