'New Anatomy', by the ensemble DALGOO, combines texts by Russian writer and poet Daniil Charms (1905-1942) with improvised music and jazz. HESTER BOVERHUIS voice LEONID VLASSOV voice JASPER LE CLERCQ violin, viola TOBIAS KLEIN alto saxophone, clarinet, bass clarinet LOTHAR OHLMEIER tenor saxophone, bass clarinet MEINRAD KNEER double bass MILO FELL drums 'Of course, the culmination of the festival was: the group DALGOO with it's project 'New Anatomy'. They 'anatomised' texts of our dearest absurdist Daniil Charms, who has devotees in the Netherlands just like in other countries. The performance was made up of declamation (by L.Vlassov, Russian immigrant), vocal (sung in Dutch, German and English by the excellent Hester Boverhuis), instrumental solo-improvisations and collective artistic delight. It was an example of Dutch new art, which is deep and easy-going, serious and funny, and not boring at all...' Marina Borisova, Izvestija, 01.10.02, about Dalgoo's performance at the Festival of Contemporary Dutch Art 2002, in Yekaterinburg, Russia 'Rhythmically, Dalgoo is a very flexible ensemble, leaving a lot of breathing space in their music. This is primarily down to the delicate, airy drumming of Milo Fell (often reminiscent of Jim Black), and his tight interplay with bassist Meinrad Kneer, whose playing acts as a nimble narrative thread... Tobias Klein and Lothar Ohlmeier, on reeds and woodwinds, are superb colorists, whose work is more orchestral than soloistic. This affords further space to the vocals; largely sung, they're also, at times, simply spoken, but always with an intimate sensibility that communicates emotionally to the listener, whether or not the words are explicitly understood... Dalgoo is an ensemble that obviously bears watching, and New Anatomy is an ear-opening listening pleasure. (Larry Nai, Cadence USA) 'From the beginning, there was no question about the high quality of Dalgoo...Dalgoo specializes in rhythmically varied miniatures, with the chemistry between reed players Tobias Klein and Lothar Ohlmeier as an effective link.' (Edo Dijksterhuis, NRC Handelsblad, 13/10/2001) 'Dalgoo plays pieces which have in common a clear build-up, tight rhythms and a good use of dynamic contrasts...the sound of the ensemble, stylistically somewhere between post bop and improvised music, is also solid as a rock.' (Ken Vos, Jazz Nu, 2/2001) 'Dalgoo...represents the continuing health of what Kevin Whitehead has named New Dutch Swing...particularly delightful are the occasional bass clarinet duets...like the album as a whole, 'Dalgoo' is varied and surprising, making the tradition into something new.' (Cadence, 8/2001) 'The musicians' collective TryTone from Amsterdam keeps proving itself as a home for interesting bands with an original view on contemporary jazz. Dalgoo plays thoughtful chamber jazz, in which atmosphere is important, but subordinate to intelligent compositions with compelling themes.' (Edo Dijksterhuis, NRC Handelsblad, 5/1/2001)
