A TAR HEEL MARCHES is set against the backdrop of the beginning civil rights movement of the 1960s. It is the true story of a man named, Fred, who struggles to leave the poverty of his Appalachian Mountains to make a new life for himself. In Part I, the author explains how he made the journey to Berea College without financial or emotional support from his family. At Berea, he befriended black students and, through his associations with them, he came to know and experience discrimination and abuse that they had known all their lives. He paints a vivid picture, sometimes hilarious, other times tragic, of life on the Berea campus from 1961-65. In Part II, the author discusses the struggles of students to get permission to go to Montgomery, and then he gives a personal testimony of what it was like to be a part of one of the largest civil rights marches in the history of the country. Chapter by chapter, the reader travels with the Berea group on the journey southward. Step by step, the author takes you on the long march through the streets of Montgomery. This book is a story of hope, justice, and equality.
