Hold Me Up

GOO GOO DOLLS

RSD 2026 Splatter edition

JED (1989 – Metal Blade Records)

Released on February 22, 1989, Jed represents an essential early chapter in the evolution of the Goo Goo Dolls, capturing the raw intensity and youthful urgency that shaped their beginnings. While the band was still rooted in a fast, abrasive punk sound, this album marks a notable moment: John Rzeznik steps forward for his first lead vocals alongside Robby Takac, laying the groundwork for the band’s future dynamic.

The album’s artwork adds a personal touch—painted by Jed Jackson, Takac’s former art teacher, whose piece Arkansas Sunset became the cover. This reflects the band’s hands‑on, DIY ethos at the time: direct, unpolished, but full of character. Jed blends high‑energy originals with distinctive cover interpretations, showing the band experimenting with personality and attitude while still shaping their identity.

Together, Jed and Hold Me Up showcase the Goo Goo Dolls at a pivotal moment in their artistic development. Jed captures the raw, restless energy of a young band finding its voice, while Hold Me Up marks the moment their songwriting, melody, and identity start to fully take shape. These albums document the beginnings of an evolution that would eventually lead the band from underground punk clubs to global stages.
